Creators will now be able to create YouTube Shorts up to three minutes long, the company announced Thursday. This change is part of a broader rollout of features that include templates, the ability to mix YouTube videos directly into Shorts, an artificial intelligence (AI)-powered video generation model, and new ways to discover trending content on YouTube. The video-streaming platform says these plugins give creators more tools to better express themselves.
YouTube Shorts is getting new features
In a blog post, YouTube announced that it is extending the length of Shorts to up to three minutes starting October 15th. This change will apply to videos created in square or higher aspect ratios, but will not affect existing Shorts. The company noted that it was the “most requested feature” by creators.
Creators will also be able to keep up with the latest trends by creating familiar content with the addition of a template feature. They can match their clips to popular sounds and then further customize them. You can recreate the shorts by tapping Remix option next to Shorts, then select Use this template. Over the next few months, YouTube will also roll out the ability to access your videos in Shorts Camera. This is claimed to make remixing easier. Short video creators will also be able to pull clips directly from YouTube videos for use in their content.
The video-streaming platform also reiterated that it will launch Google DeepMind’s Veo AI model for video generation in the coming months, bringing more video backgrounds and standalone video clips. YouTube says it’s making it easier for viewers to keep up with the latest trends with a new Shorts trends page on mobile. Comments will also be previewed in the Shorts feed, allowing creators to peek into what their audience is saying.
However, if YouTube users don’t prefer short videos, they can now customize their recommendations by selecting Show fewer short videos option.
