WhatsApp is working on a feature that will allow users to set a default theme, changing the color of the chat bubble in the app on their smartphone. The new personalization option could offer a choice of color presets, and was spotted in development using the feature tracker on a recent beta version of the iPhone app. The Met-owned messaging app recently updated its app’s color scheme for iOS users, adopting a green accent for various elements such as buttons and notification counters.
Spotted feature of default WhatsApp chat theme
In the latest beta version of WhatsApp for iOS 24.11.10.70 available to users through Apple’s test program TestFlight, feature tracker WABetaInfo spotted a new Default chat topic a feature currently under development. This means that the feature can’t be enabled right now, but it should be available for beta testers to try at a later date.
Default feature of WhatsApp chat theme: How it works
According to a screenshot shared by a feature tracker, WhatsApp is working on a new in-app chat topic selector, which will be located in the settings menu. Users can choose from five options — the default green theme, as well as blue, gray, red, and purple.

The leaked image also contains a snippet of text informing the user that selecting one of the chat themes will set the color and background – with a matching WhatsApp doodle themed background – for the chats on their phone.
Unlike Instagram, setting a chat topic will only apply to the same phone. That means it is Default chat topic the setting will not change the chat topic for both users — unlike Instagram, which allows users to theme conversations based on the chat.
This new chat topic selector is expected to be available to beta testers on iOS in the future, before it hits the stable channel. Since most of the features are shared between WhatsApp for iOS and Android, we can expect this feature to make its way to the Android version of the app in the future.
