Vodafone is partnering with Google to promote AI phones and services

Vodafone Group Plc has partnered with Alphabet’s Google to provide cloud services, generative artificial intelligence (AI) tools and cybersecurity to its customers in Europe and Africa.

The 10-year extension to the existing partnership will see Vodafone promote Google’s cloud storage subscriptions, including Google One AI Premium, which provides access to the Gemini chatbot, Vodafone said in a statement on Tuesday.

The British carrier will also show customers how to use the latest AI features of Pixel devices in stores.

“That’s partly because the nature of the device and the nature of the experience people get from the device will change as AI becomes much more visible on the device,” said Thomas Kurian, COO of Google Cloud. Google and Vodafone are working to make it “super easy for people to experience these things and make purchasing decisions.”

Telecom providers are looking to diversify their revenue streams by offering digital services in addition to connectivity. In doing so, they are trying to emulate the success of big tech companies that have amassed huge profits as many operators have failed.

Vodafone will also use Google technology to improve search, recommendations and ad targeting for its Vodafone TV box service and develop a new cloud-based cybersecurity product for business users, it said in a statement.
