Ubisoft CEO confirms that several remakes of old Assassin’s Creed games are in the works

Assassin’s Creed is the jewel in Ubisoft’s crown, with games in the franchise reportedly selling over 200 million units since their launch in 2007. The action-adventure series has undergone several changes across its 13 core titles, moving away from its stealth-oriented historical adventure roots. to the open world RPG approach seen in recent games. Ubisoft is set to release the next game in the series later this year, but there’s more on the way. The studio has confirmed that several remakes of old Assassin’s Creed games are in the works.

Assassin’s Creed remakes

Ubisoft CEO Yves Guillemault shed some light on the future of Assassin’s Creed and the studio’s future portfolio of games in an interview published on the company’s website last week. The executive confirmed that fans can expect several AC remakes, without divulging any details about their titles or launch dates.

“First, players can be excited about some of the remakes that will allow us to revisit some of the games we’ve made in the past and modernize them; Some of our older Assassin’s Creed games have worlds that are still incredibly rich,” said Guillemot.

Ubisoft’s CEO has promised more diversity in the Assassin’s Creed titles, saying the series will focus on delivering a different experience with each release. Last year’s Assassin’s Creed Mirage, for example, offered a more compact and stealthy game reminiscent of the early games in the series. Meanwhile, the upcoming Assassin’s Creed Shadows will continue the broad, open-world RPG approach of recent games like Assassin’s Creed Valhalla.

“The goal is to have more Assassin’s Creed games, but not to have them be the same every year,” he said. Guillot also talked about the already announced Assassin’s Creed Hexe. The game was announced at Ubisoft Forward in 2022 and will explore a period centered on the 16th century witch trials. While Ubisoft is keeping its cards close to its chest when it comes to details about the game and its release window, Guillemot has confirmed that Assassin’s Creed Hexe will be very different from Assassin’s Creed Shadows. “I think we’re going to surprise people,” he said.

Assassin’s Creed Shadows

Guillemot also shared a few details about the upcoming Assassin’s Creed Shadows game. The open-world action-adventure is set to launch in Japan on November 15 for PC, PS5, and Xbox Series S/X. Ubisoft’s CEO talked about the game’s dynamic weather system, promising that the mechanics will go beyond superficial visual changes to impact gameplay.

“In Assassin’s Creed Shadows, for example, we have a weather system that will affect gameplay; for example, water bodies that were once swimmable can freeze over,” he said. “Visually, we also see a big step forward,” added the Ubisoft CEO.

The studio head also confirmed Ubisoft’s commitment to live service titles and touted the potential uses of generative artificial intelligence (AI) in video game development.
