Sony has announced its State of Play games presentation, scheduled for Thursday, May 30. The live stream, which will begin at 3:00 PM PT / 6:00 PM ET (or 3:30 AM ET on Friday), will include game updates for PS5 and PS VR2. The show will also provide a preview of Sony’s premium games coming later this year. The latest State of Play demo took place on February 6th, where Square Enix took a deep dive into Final Fantasy 7 Rebirth.
What to expect from State of Play
The presentation will last more than 30 minutes and will include 14 games for PS5 and PS VR2. Sony hasn’t released any details about the show’s content, but rumors say a new Astro Bot title from Team Asobi, an update to Destiny 2: The Final Shape, and an announcement of PS VR2 PC gaming support are expected. A major reveal from Sony’s first studios — such as Insomniac Games’ Wolverine update or subsequent games from Naughty Dog or Santa Monica Studio — is unlikely, as the demo will focus on PlayStation Studios games coming out in 2024.
Demonstration events of the summer games
State of Play will kick off the gaming industry’s summer event season. After Sony’s show on May 30, Jeff Kaley’s Summer Game Fest, which has de facto replaced E3 as the summer’s biggest gaming event, will air on June 7. Devolver Digital will hold its own Direct presentation on the same day. The Summer Game Fest Day of the Devs event, which focuses on indie games, will also take place on June 7.
Then, on June 9, Microsoft will host the Xbox Games Showcase, immediately followed by a live presentation dedicated to Call of Duty: Black Ops 6. The PC Gaming Show will also take place on June 9. A day later, Ubisoft Forward will appear with updates for Assassin’s Creed Shadows and Star Wars Outlaws.
Sony has already held two State of Play broadcasts this year. The first presentation took place on January 31, and featured games such as Death Stranding 2, Stellar Blade, Rise of the Ronin, and more. The second State of Play of the year, dedicated to Final Fantasy 7 Rebirth, was broadcast on February 6. The latest edition of the event will be streamed live on PlayStation’s YouTube, Twitch and TikTok channels.
