The iPhone 17 lineup will reportedly feature 120Hz LTPO displays

Apple is expected to unveil its iPhone 17 lineup in the second half of next year. While there have been speculations that Apple will include a new iPhone 17 Air model in the lineup, a new report out of South Korea suggests that all iPhone 17 models will feature an LTPO (Low Temperature Polycrystalline Oxide) screen with a high refresh rate. This would be a significant upgrade over the previous iPhone series. Apple typically puts high-refresh-rate screens only on the Pro model, and even the latest iPhone 16 and 16 Plus only offer a 60Hz panel.

Apple may put ProMotion 120Hz displays on all iPhone 17 models

ETNews, citing industry sources, reports that all models in the iPhone 17 lineup will have LTPO screens from Samsung and LG. The LTPO screen technology, which provides a high refresh rate of 120 Hz, is currently exclusive to the high-end Pro series. This greatly improves the smoothness and responsiveness of the screen when scrolling, watching animations and playing games, while reducing power consumption.

However, this isn’t the first time we’ve heard about iPhone 17 displays. Ross Young of Display Supply Chain Consultants said in September that all models in the 2025 lineup will feature 120Hz ProMotion displays, including the non-professional versions.

Starting in 2021, Apple will offer 120Hz screens under the ProMotion brand on its iPhone Pro models. It also provides an always-on display feature. This year’s iPhone 16 has a 6.1-inch Super Retina XDR OLED display, while the iPhone 16 Plus has a larger 6.7-inch Super Retina XDR OLED display, but limited to 60Hz. iPhone 16 Pro and iPhone 16 Pro Max have 6.3-inch and 6.9-inch Super Retina XDR OLED displays, respectively, with a refresh rate of 120 Hz (ProMotion).

According to previous leaks, Apple will introduce a new “Slim” or “Air” variant with the iPhone 17 series, which will replace the Plus version. The iPhone 17 Pro models are said to be powered by the Apple A19 Pro chip along with 12GB of RAM. The standard iPhone 17 and iPhone 17 Air can run on the A18 or A19 chip with support for 8 GB of RAM. All four iPhone 17 models could have 24-megapixel front-facing cameras.
