The Google Pixel 9 Pro series and Pixel 8 Pro’s pre-installed Thermometer app might get a new feature that could make the temperature recording process easier, according to a report. It is said to be detected while removing the APK of the app. Using the temperature sensor located on the back of the Pixel 9 Pro, 9 Pro XL and Pixel 8 Pro, this feature can automatically detect the material whose temperature will be measured.
A new feature of the thermometer app on Google Pixel
In a report, Android Authority, in collaboration with tipster AssembleDebug, revealed that the Thermometer app on the Google Pixel 9 Pro/XL and Pixel 8 Pro is testing the automatic material detection feature. It is said to have been discovered after removing the APK of Pixel Thermometer app version 1.0.676362763.
Currently, Pixel users have to manually select an item’s material before measuring its temperature. It includes options such as food and organic, drink and water, cast iron, glossy material, matte material, fabric and wood. However, with a new feature, this requirement can be negated, with the device automatically detecting the type of material before scanning using the TensorFlow Lite model.
Meanwhile, it can still represent an optional choice for manual material selection. The report speculates that this feature could be available in the material selection menu. Although strings pointing to this capability were observed, the publication was unable to activate it on its devices.
It’s important to note that the discoveries made during the teardown of the APK are part of a wider umbrella of features under development. While developers can test many of them, it’s possible that not all of them will make it to the public release of the app.
Body temperature measurement on the Pixel
Earlier this month, Google introduced the ability to measure body temperature using supported Pixel smartphones for users in Europe. This capability joins the object temperature measurement feature that already exists in the Pixel Thermometer app. Users can also choose to connect their Fitbit to the app to record their temperature.
It is now available in Austria, Belgium, Denmark, France, Germany, Spain, Great Britain and many other countries.
