Study suggests microbiome-boosting supplements as solution to severe malnutrition in children

Recent research suggests that strengthening the gut microbiome may play a key role in the treatment of severe malnutrition in children. A study conducted in Bangladesh by Jeffrey Gordon of the University of Washington and Tahmeed Ahmed of the International Center for Diarrheal Disease Research focused on children between the ages of 12 and 18 months. These children, who suffered from severe malnutrition, were treated with a supplement designed to nurture their gut microbiome. The supplement contained ingredients such as chickpeas, banana and peanut flour, which promote the growth of beneficial intestinal bacteria.

Study methodology and findings

124 children who were admitted to hospitals due to severe malnutrition participated in the research. After receiving treatment to address any infections, they were divided into two groups: one received a microbiome-targeted supplement, while the other received traditional ready-to-use therapeutic food (RUF). The findings revealed that those receiving the microbiome supplement gained weight faster and showed improved levels of proteins essential for the development of their muscles, bones and brain.
