Square Enix wants to release Final Fantasy 16 on Xbox after the PC port

Final Fantasy XVI was released exclusively on PS5 in 2023, and last month the game finally came to PC. The action RPG is still not available on Xbox, and there are no confirmed plans to launch on Microsoft’s console. Now, publisher Square Enix has provided an update on the possible release of Final Fantasy 16 on the Xbox Series S/X.

According to Final Fantasy 16 producer and industry legend Naoki Yoshida, popularly known as Yoshi-P, Square Enix wants to release an Xbox port of FFXVI, but the company has yet to confirm a timeline for that.

“Obviously, we’ve announced the PC version of the game, so looking at the Xbox version, we want to release it on Xbox,” Yoshida said in an interview with Video Games published last week. “But when it comes to details, like when the game will be available, etc., we are not in a position to share anything,” he added.

The producer, however, asked Xbox players not to lose hope, saying that Square Enix really wants the game to be ported to Xbox. “But, of course, I want to say that there is no hope, and we really want to achieve this. So the players should not give up on their hopes.”

Neither Square Enix nor Microsoft have yet confirmed that Final Fantasy 16 will be ported to Xbox.

Final Fantasy 16 first launched on PS5 on June 22, 2023. The game was recently released on PC and launched on Steam and the Epic Games Store on September 17th. The Complete Edition, which includes the Echoes of the Fallen and The Rising Tide expansions from the base game, also recently launched on PS5.

Square Enix launched its latest Final Fantasy games exclusively on the PS5, a strategy that ultimately backfired on sales. Earlier this year, the publisher said in an earnings report that sales of its latest big-budget games were disappointing. According to company CEO Takashi Kiryu, sales of Final Fantasy VII Rebirth, Final Fantasy XVI, and Foamstars — all PlayStation exclusives — fell short of expectations in terms of both revenue and profit.

As a result, Square Enix has since undergone a major restructuring and is moving away from the practice of releasing major titles on the PlayStation first. According to Kiryu, future major releases will be multi-platform, available for PlayStation, Nintendo Switch, Xbox and PC.
