Samsung announced the introduction of passkey support for its range of TVs and other devices in its ecosystem at the Samsung Developer Conference (SDC) 2024 held in San Jose on Thursday. This means that users will be able to log into their devices more easily, while also improving their security. It joins other announcements from the South Korean tech conglomerate in artificial intelligence (AI), smartphones and other key areas.
Password support for the home ecosystem
According to Samsung, it will extend Passkey to TVs running its proprietary Tizen operating system (OS) starting in 2025. Its AI Family Hub-equipped refrigerator and other AI Home-enabled home appliances will also support login using more secure passwords.
Furthermore, its home ecosystem devices will have support for web browser login by scanning QR codes.
Along with the password expansion, Samsung also announced that Knox Matrix — a blockchain-based multi-device security solution — will now be available on more devices, including TVs and home appliances.
Other notifications
Samsung unveiled new updates for SmartThings at its developer conference. One of the newly announced features is Home Insight which is claimed to analyze user data, usage patterns, device history and other statistics collected in real time. This will offer users a better home experience, according to the company.
In addition, all Samsung display products will now feature SmartThings Hub for improved connectivity with partner devices. It also includes Edge AI which adds AI capabilities to existing connected home devices. The company also announced a partnership with smart key developers Schlage and Aqara to add SmartThings Door Lock functionality to the Digital Home Key within the Samsung Wallet app. This change will happen next year.
Tizen OS also gets AI functionality. Samsung’s Neural Processing Unit (NPU) powered devices will deliver personalized experiences. It will be able to control aspects such as echo and noise levels while watching TV, or improve note-taking by analyzing users’ writing styles. Its Multi-Control feature also extends to Tizen-powered smart monitors and TVs.
