Samsung Galaxy Watch X with new chip, better battery life to debut as Apple Watch Ultra 2 competitor: report

The Samsung Galaxy Watch X could be the flagship smartwatch in the South Korean tech giant’s upcoming series of wearables, according to a report. The company is expected to unveil the successors to the Galaxy Watch 6 line at its next Galaxy Unpacked event in July, alongside new Samsung foldable smartphones. The Galaxy Ring, which the company teased at Mobile World Congress (MWC 2024) in February, is expected to make its debut at the event.

The Samsung Galaxy Watch X will debut as the most premium Galaxy Watch

Earlier it was reported that Samsung could introduce a new premium level in its line of smart watches. While it was previously speculated to adopt the “Ultra” moniker like Apple’s smartwatches, a report from Tech Manics (in Greek) claims it could come as the Galaxy Watch X instead.

According to the report, the Galaxy Watch X would be a premium version of the Galaxy Watch 7, aimed at rugged use cases. Apple also has a similar offering in the form of the Apple Watch Ultra 2 which sits at the top of its line of smartwatches. The Galaxy Watch X model is speculated to offer water resistance of up to 100m, double that of Samsung’s current flagship smartwatches.

The company may also introduce battery life improvements on the next Galaxy Watch X. Currently, the Galaxy Watch 6 promises up to 40 hours of use on a single charge with the always-on display (AOD) turned off. The report suggests that the Galaxy Watch X would more than double that, promising up to 100 hours of battery life.

While pricing has not been revealed, the publication speculates that the price of the Galaxy Watch X could be “significantly higher” compared to the company’s current offering. It would reportedly compete directly with the Apple Watch Ultra 2, both in terms of specs and price.

The Galaxy Watch 7 is expected to have a redesigned body

This development comes just days after it was reported that the Galaxy Watch 7 series – comprising the Galaxy Watch 7, Watch 7 Pro and the new Watch X – could receive a design overhaul. Renders of the new premium model have surfaced online, hinting at a new square bezel, a third circular button and an array of health sensors.

It will reportedly retain the rotating bezels and have a 1.5-inch round display. The smartwatch reportedly measures 47 x 47.4 x 16.4 mm.
