iPhone 16 Pro may offer 5x optical zoom as Apple orders more periscope lenses: report

It is believed that Apple is two months away from the presentation of the new generation iPhone family. However, details of the iPhone 16 Pro series camera have surfaced online, suggesting that Apple is adding advanced features to the Pro model instead of the cheaper iPhone 16 or iPhone 16 Plus. The iPhone 16 Pro and iPhone 16 Pro Max are expected to have a tetraprism 5x zoom lens. Last year, Apple used this lens exclusively on the most expensive iPhone 15 Pro Max.

Apple orders more periscope lenses

According to a report from DigitTimes Asia, Apple plans to expand the use of periscope lenses for its upcoming iPhone 16 series, and several key suppliers have received more orders for the lenses. The report, citing industry sources, said that Taiwanese lens module manufacturers Largan Precision and Genius Electronic Optical (GSEO) are expected to be the main suppliers of tetraprism camera components. It can allow 5x optical and 25x digital zoom

Largan supplied the periscope lenses for the iPhone 15 Pro Max launched last year, and GSEO is likely to join as a new supplier. This indicates that the iPhone 16 Pro and iPhone 16 Pro Max will get an improved 5x tetraprism lens. Last year, Apple equipped a tetraprism 5x zoom lens exclusively for the iPhone 15 Pro Max, while the iPhone 15 Pro was limited to 3x optical zoom.

An update to the camera of the iPhone 16 Pro series is expected

In addition to optical zoom capabilities, the iPhone 16 Pro models are expected to include a 48-megapixel primary camera and an ultra-wide-angle camera. The most expensive iPhone model may have an improved 48-megapixel Sony IMX903 primary camera, while the iPhone 16 Pro is said to get a 48-megapixel Sony IMX803 sensor. This sensor is also available on existing iPhone 15 Pro models.

All four iPhone 16 models are believed to come with the same A18 chip. A new capture button may appear on the iPhone 16 Pro.
