According to a report, the iPhone 16 and Google Pixel 9 are two of the most anticipated smartphones of 2024, and they may have one big thing in common – displays from Samsung. Google is expected to unveil its smartphones at the Made by Google event on August 13, while Apple’s presentation is likely to take place in September. However, both these smartphones will have “M14” screens manufactured by Samsung Display.
iPhone 16, Pixel 9 displays
According to a report by South Korean outlet ETNews, Samsung Display will be the main supplier of OLED screens for both the iPhone 16 and Google Pixel 9. Samsung Display produces screens based on organic material structure, with the “M14” being the latest addition. At the moment, the Galaxy S24 Ultra uses the company’s highest-quality OLED screen, which is labeled “M13”. On the other hand, the iPhone 15 Pro was suspected to have the same “M12” display used by its predecessor.
It is noteworthy that the OLED display consists of organic materials for displaying color. Unlike LCD screens, where the backlight illuminates liquid crystals, the pixels on OLED displays are self-illuminating. This tends to result in wider viewing angles and better color reproduction, especially when it comes to projecting blacks.
The report says that while all smartphones in the Google Pixel 9 lineup are expected to feature an “M14” display, only the iPhone 16 Pro and iPhone 16 Pro Max will get it. Instead, the base iPhone 16 and iPhone 16 Plus can use “M12” screens. In addition, Samsung Display is said to be offering Google four types of “M14” displays – three for the Pixel 9 variants and one for the Google Pixel Fold, as well as a rumored successor.
Citing an industry official, the report claims that Samsung has placed an order for the materials needed to make the “M14” panel and has begun preparations for its production.
