The Honor MagicOS 9.0 update for smartphones and other devices was launched in China on Wednesday. The update is based on Android 15 and includes features such as Smart Capsule, which is Honor’s own take on Apple’s Dynamic Island, a new intuitive animation engine, face recognition on swapping, and an updated Turbo X system. It also uses artificial intelligence (AI) at its core and integrates several related features, including AI Notes, AI Translation, and more.

The MagicOS 9.0 update will be available in public beta from November 2024 to March 2025. A total of 36 devices, including smartphones and tablets, will be compatible with the update. The list of models receiving Honor MagicOS 9.0 is as follows:

Features of Honor MagicOS 9.0

Honor MagicOS 9.0 offers more than 20 lock screen styles with customization options and the ability to select 3D and anime elements. It includes a smart capsule feature that can provide real-time weather alerts, face change detection, or doctor appointments without taking up the entire screen. Honor introduced a more intuitive animation engine, which it claims provides a smoother interaction when changing the layout of the home screen, switching between apps or simply viewing information on the lock screen. The Turbo X Engine has also been updated to achieve an 11 percent reduction in power consumption during unified rendering, as well as an increase in power of up to 40 percent.

AI is an important part of MagicOS 9.0. It offers a facial change detection feature that is claimed to protect users from deep fakes during video calls or other online interactions. YOYO Agent — Honor’s AI assistant — gets new features, including managing notifications, ordering drinks, and comparing prices. Honor says it uses the Magic Model family, which includes a large speech model, a large image model, a large voice model and a multimodal model.

Other system programs also have AI features. Users can take advantage of the new features of AI Notes, AI Documents and AI Translation. Magic Editor can remove unwanted objects from images, enhance them with filters and even restore old photos. For daily tasks, MagiOS 9.0 has an intelligent fitness trainer that can create personalized training plans and adjust them in real time according to the user’s daily routine. There’s also a new travel assistant that provides accommodation and transportation recommendations.

Other features of the update include two-device messaging, home and car integration, cross-device security, and a Circle-to-Search-like visual search feature called Anydoor.
