Honor brings Google’s generative AI features powered by Google Cloud to its devices, shares AI strategy

Honor has become the latest smartphone brand to enter the artificial intelligence (AI) race after announcing its four-layer AI strategy and plans to integrate AI for the future at the VivaTech 2024 session on Wednesday. The company also announced that it will introduce generative AI features using Google Cloud. However, the Chinese smartphone maker also intends to build an AI-centric user interface inside its MagicOS Android-based skin. The interface will be integrated with functionality for multiple devices and operating systems at its foundation and build from there.

Honor’s four-layer AI architecture

During a session at the VivaTech 2024 event in Paris, Honor noted that it plans to integrate AI into its MagicOS UI. This architecture will have four layers. At the foundation level, AI capabilities between devices and OS will be a priority to create an open ecosystem.

The second and third layers will subsequently focus on platform-level AI and application-level AI. The company said platform-centric AI will help create a personalized OS experience, while application-level integration will allow developers to build AI-powered generative apps.

Finally, the fourth and highest layer will focus on cloud-based integration of AI services. This may include company-provided features that run on Honor’s servers or partnerships with other companies that offer similar services. Namely, the smartphone manufacturer has confirmed that it will use Google Cloud to introduce AI features to its devices.

In partnership with Google, Honor will integrate Gemini’s cloud-based AI features and extend them to its devices. While the Chinese brand did not confirm whether these features will only include the Android-based AI features that the Mountain View tech giant includes or exclusive cloud-based features during the event, a company spokesperson shed more light on it.

According to a CNBC report, a spokesperson confirmed that Honor will use the Gemini AI assistant as well as its text generator in the Imagen 2. This could be a unique offer from Honor as no other smartphone brand has offered this generation of images model to users so far.

Separately, Honor CEO George Zhao told TechRadar that the company believes its four-layer AI architecture will deliver an intent-based user experience that can rival Samsung’s Galaxy AI. Namely, MagicOS 8.0, which began to be released last month, will receive this integration.
