HMD announced a strategic partnership with the Norwegian company Xplora, which offers smart watches for children. The cooperation is aimed at creating a new type of phone, an alternative smartphone, for children and teenagers. This project is the result of a global survey conducted by the company earlier this year, which identified the need among parents for a non-addictive productivity device for young people. The company has yet to announce the phone’s name, likely launch dates, or any other details.
HMD x Xplora collaboration
HMD, a Finnish OEM, announced in a press release on October 29 that it is working with Xplora to create a new phone aimed at children and teenagers. Companies aim to create “responsible and considerate devices” for users.
Earlier this year, HMD launched The Better Phone Project. The launch of the project was accompanied by a global survey of 10,000 parents. More than half of the surveyed parents regretted having offered their children a smartphone from the very beginning. According to the parents, this negatively affected the time spent with the family, the sleep cycle, the exercise regime and the children’s communication opportunities.
HMD says it is in the process of creating “a suite of new solutions that will become a viable alternative to smartphones.” This includes a smartphone alternative for children and teenagers. Notably, HMD previously introduced Detox Mode on its HMD Skyline and HMD Fusion phones, which helps users control screen time.
The name, specs or launch details of HMD and Xplora’s joint phone have yet to be announced. Speculation suggests that the first phone could be unveiled at Mobile World Congress 2025 next March.
Meanwhile, previous leaks suggest that HMD is preparing to launch the HMD Sage smartphone next. It recently surfaced online with a design very similar to the HMD Skyline or HMD Crest phones. It is expected to be powered by the Unisoc T760 5G, have a 50MP rear and selfie camera, and support 33W wired fast charging.
