Google Gemini to get Spotify integration via new AI Assistant extension: report

Google Gemini could soon communicate with the streaming music and audiobook platform Spotify. The tech giant introduced the Gemini assistant for compatible smartphones earlier this year, but its functionality was very limited. While the artificial intelligence (AI) chatbot could perform generative AI tasks, it wasn’t as integrated with Google and third-party apps as its predecessor, Google Assistant. It has since added support for various Google apps and even released a YouTube Music extension in May. Now, a report claims that the Spotify extension could be rolling out soon.

Google Gemini will reportedly get a Spotify extension

According to a report by Android Authority, proof of the Spotify extension was found inside the Google app. In an exercise in disassembling the app, the publication found strings of code that hinted at the feature’s existence. It also appears that users could log into their Spotify account using the Gemini AI assistant. Namely, the code was found in version 15.22.29.29.arm64 of Google’s application for Android devices.

Start playing on Spotify
Spotify requires a login

As seen above, these were the code strings found by the publication. In both examples, the word ‘robin’ refers to Gemini. Google has called its original AI model by that name since it was known as Bard. In the first string, it clearly refers to “Start playing on Spotify,” which is likely the text users will see after the AI processes the query.

In the next line, “Spotify requires login” probably refers to the state when the user is not logged into their account. It’s currently unclear whether this means users will have to manually log into an account by opening the Spotify app or providing their login credentials.

While the code inside Google’s app is a sign that the feature is in development, it’s unlikely that the feature will be rolled out anytime soon. It appears that the tech giant is currently only conducting preliminary tests with the codes.

If the effort is successful, the Spotify extension will be released to beta testers first, long before the stable version is released. The whole process could easily take months. However, these are just speculations and we will have to wait for Google to release an official update.
