Steam and other digital game stores are reportedly canceling pre-orders for the Ghost of Tsushima Director’s Cut PC port and refunding players in countries where the PlayStation Network is not officially available. The game comes with PSN support on PC and will give players the ability to use the new PlayStation Overlay, which essentially brings the PS5 interface to PC, complete with support for Trophies and more. Ghost of Tsushima has reportedly been pulled from storefronts in over 170 countries where PSN is not used.
This development follows the fiasco when Sony made PSN account linking mandatory for Helldivers 2 players on Steam earlier this month. Parent company PlayStation backed off the decision after widespread backlash from PC gamers.
Developer Sucker Punch has confirmed that Ghost of Tsushima, which is due for release on PC on May 16, will only require Steam players to link their PSN account for Legends’ online multiplayer mode. The single-player campaign can be played without registering and linking a PSN account.
According to a report from Eurogamer, digital PC stores such as Steam, Epic Games Store and Green Man Gaming are offering refunds for pre-orders of the game. Refunds are issued in regions where the PlayStation Network is unavailable, preventing players from accessing the game’s Legends online multiplayer mode.
According to the report, Steam players who pre-ordered the game and don’t have access to PSN are getting a message that says, “You are getting a refund for the game you pre-purchased – Ghost of Tsushima.” The publisher of this game now requires an additional account to play parts of this game and this account cannot be created in your country.” Several pre-orders from the Epic Games Store and GMG have also reportedly been returned.
Sony and Sucker Punch have yet to address this situation. So far, the developer has only confirmed that a PSN account is required to play Ghost of Tsushima’s Legends multiplayer.
Last week, Sony reversed its decision to require Helldivers 2 players on Steam to link their PlayStation Network accounts to Valve’s store after a major backlash. The company previously announced that users will need to link their Steam account to their PSN account by the end of May in order to continue playing Helldivers 2.
Ghost of Tsushima Director’s Cut is scheduled to release on PC via Steam and the Epic Games Store on May 16.
