Ghost of Tsushima Director’s Cut became the largest single-player PlayStation game on Steam. Ghost of Tsushima is a hit on PC, despite issues with the PSN connection requirement that have resulted in the game being removed from Steam in over 170 countries. Since launching on May 16, the game has peaked at 77,154 concurrent players on Steam, breaking the all-time high of Sony’s previous biggest single-player game, God of War.
SteamDB, a site that shows the number of active players for various games on Valve’s storefront, revealed that Ghost of Tsushima Director’s Cut reached a maximum number of concurrent players of 77,154 within days of its launch. The number of players makes the action-adventure the biggest PlayStation single-player launch on Steam. This award previously belonged to God of War, which was released on PC in January 2022. The all-time maximum number of simultaneous players in a game on Steam is 73,529 players.
Since Ghost of Tsushima launched on PC, the number of players has been growing, climbing the Steam rankings. At the time of writing, the game had 32,024 concurrent players on the service. The game’s success on Steam came after its launch was marred by controversy over requiring users to link their PlayStation Network account to Steam in order to play the Legends game mode.
Ahead of the game’s release, Steam, the Epic Games Store, and GMG reportedly canceled pre-orders for the PC port and issued refunds to players in countries where PSN wasn’t officially available. The move comes after Ghost of Tsushima developer Sucker Punch confirmed that while the game’s single-player campaign can be played without signing up and connecting a PSN account, Steam players will have to link their PSN account to access the multiplayer Legends online mode.
Ghost of Tsushima has also reportedly been pulled from digital storefronts in over 170 non-PSN countries. It’s worth noting that the game comes with the new PlayStation Overlay, which essentially brings the PS5 interface to PC and allows players to access their PlayStation account, friends list, trophies, and more. Overlay is an additional feature.
While the open-world game is currently Sony’s biggest single-player launch on Steam, it remains far behind the top spot when you count titles from live services. Sony’s Helldivers 2, which launched simultaneously on PS5 and PC in February, became a phenomenon on PC, breaking Steam records and becoming one of the most popular games on the platform. The co-op shooter is also now the fastest-selling PlayStation game, selling 12 million units in the first 12 weeks of release.
