Electronic Arts likely won’t be working on an Apex Legends sequel, the company suggested during its fiscal second quarter 2025 earnings call on Tuesday. EA CEO Andrew Wilson, when asked about a potential “Apex 2.0” during a conference call, said that the second iteration of the live service title was almost never as successful as the first version, and argued that EA is focused on continuing to support Apex players. Legends with seasonal content updates.
Apex Legends fails to live up to expectations in Q2 2024
EA on Tuesday announced its Q2 2025 earnings report, reporting record net bookings of $2.079 billion (roughly Rs. 17,480 crore) for the quarter. Strong results were driven by EA Sports franchises such as College Football 25, Madden 25 and EA Sports FC 25. During its quarterly earnings report, EA’s CEO touched on live service title Apex Legends, confirming that the shooter fell short of expectations in the quarter. after the launch of season 22.
According to Wilson, the franchise needed a major overhaul to re-engage players and drive the growth of live services. “Following the changes to the design of the Battle Pass, we did not see the growth in monetization that we expected,” Wilson said during the earnings conference call.
“In the free-to-play shooter category, two things became clear from the first game. First, in a competitive environment where brand, strong player base and high quality mechanics are more important than ever, Apex has proven to be a compelling franchise for us and an industry leader,” said Wilson.
“Second, to drive significant growth and re-engagement, major systemic changes are required. We will continue to focus on the preservation and breadth of content for our global community as we work towards more significant innovation in the future,” he added.
Apex Legends 2 may not happen
However, during a question-and-answer session on the earnings call, Wilson seemed to rule out Apex Legends 2. When asked about the need for an “Apex 2.0” rather than an incremental update, Wilson said EA’s goal was to provide season-by-season updates and keep adding creative features to the existing game instead of overhauling it.
“But what I would say is that typically what we’ve seen again in the context of large-scale service-driven games is that the second version is almost never as successful as the first version.” , — said Wilson. “Really, our goal right now is to continue to support the global player base that we have and deliver new innovative creative content season after season, and create these other things, but create them in a way that players don’t have to give up from the progress they have made or from the investments they have made in the existing ecosystem,” he added.
The CEO said he doesn’t think a “standalone” experience is needed to re-engage Apex Legends players.
“Any time we challenge the global community of gamers to choose between the investments they’ve made today and the innovative creativity of the future, it’s never going to be a good place for our community. So our goal will be to continue to innovate in the core experience, and you’re seeing that from season to season now as our seasons gradually get bigger and we’re changing the key play modalities in those seasons and then creating additional opportunities to participate in different game modes beyond what the core mechanic currently delivers. And we think we can do those two things together, and we don’t believe that you have to separate the experience to do that. But again, the team is working on it right now,” Wilson said.
Apex Legends Season 22
Although Apex Legends remains a popular online shooter with a dedicated player base, five years after its launch in 2019, player numbers have dwindled. In August, EA launched Apex Legends Season 22 with new features such as more modes, a new map and a new cheat protection system.
However, net bookings for the game fell short of EA’s expectations in the second quarter of 2025, even as it extended access to the free-to-play network for the entire first half of Season 22 Battle Pass, the company said in its financial results for the quarter. Accordingly, EA said it adjusted the remainder of fiscal 2025 to reflect lower-than-expected interest in the game.
However, despite lower expectations for Apex Legends, the company said it is on track to maintain mid-single digit growth for its core live services.
