Cyberpunk 2077 is getting an Ultimate Edition, which includes the latest version of the game along with the Phantom Liberty expansion. The full version will be released on December 5 for PC, PS5, and Xbox Series S/X, with the latter receiving a full physical release. The Xbox bundle will come with three discs of all content, while the PS5 version will include a disc for the base version with the v2.0 update and a voucher for the expansion downloadable from the PlayStation Store. The PC version, meanwhile, provides a code that can be used on the GOG platform — no discs at all — CD Projekt Red’s own game client, which ensures it keeps the full portion of the purchase.
“The reason for the difference in how Phantom Liberty is included in the Ultimate Edition is due to technical requirements specific to each platform,” a CD Projekt Red representative told IGN of the strange packaging decision. This, of course, is frustrating for PlayStation owners, who are racing to keep their physical media alive as major publishers continue to go down the path of a digital future. While CD Projekt Red simply cited platform-specific “technical requirements” as an obstacle, John Linneman of Digital Foundry suspects that the developer likely didn’t want to create a separate disc build for the PS5 release. More surprisingly, Cyberpunk 2077 never launched physically on next-gen consoles, so the publisher had to create an entirely separate three-disc compilation in addition to pulling off a new cover. For what it’s worth, Cyberpunk 2077 has now surpassed Baldur’s Gate 3, which was also slated for a three-disc Xbox Series X release.
Owners of old-gen PS4 and Xbox One consoles won’t be able to access the Ultimate Edition, as the 2.0 update and Phantom Liberty expansion are reserved for the current generation. The full version of Cyberpunk 2077 is expected to be priced at $60 (roughly Rs. 5,000), and the physical versions will go on sale at select retailers on December 5. PC players will be able to purchase the Ultimate Edition digitally from GOG, while Steam users can purchase the bundle, which is currently available for Rs. 2,758 as part of the current Fall Sale. It also marks the end of Cyberpunk 2077’s post-launch content, as the team moves to Unreal Engine 5 for future development projects such as the Cyberpunk sequel and a slew of announced Witcher games.
Cyberpunk 2077 had a rocky launch in 2020, with PS4 players facing the worst experience due to extremely low framerates and crashes, forcing Sony to step in and remove it from the platform. After years of fixes and patches, the game experienced a sudden resurgence last year when the anime Cyberpunk: Edgerunners dropped on Netflix, attracting millions of players to the Night City. Then in September, the studio launched update 2.0, which completely overhauled the bonus system and limited technical additions in anticipation of the Phantom Liberty expansion.
Cyberpunk 2077: Ultimate Edition will be released on December 5 for PC, PS5 and Xbox Series S/X. The Phantom Liberty base game and expansion can also be purchased separately on the platforms listed.
