Apple has been speculated to be developing a new type of product — a home accessory that will run on a software variant of tvOS and have a touchscreen on top. According to a new report, this alleged device could have artificial intelligence (AI) capabilities thanks to Apple’s latest A18 processor. It may also include support for hand gestures, FaceTime and other video conferencing platforms, with the help of the device’s built-in cameras.

Apple HomePod with touchscreen features (expected)

According to a report by 9to5Mac, the alleged device carries the identifier “HomeAccessory”. This leak confirms a previous report that also hinted at code discovered in Apple’s backend that pointed to a new category identifier “HomeAccessory17,1”. It is said to be codenamed J490.

Apple’s rumored device in development could be powered by the A18 chipset that also powers the new iPhone 16 series. As a result, it is speculated to have support for Apple Intelligence – the company’s suite of AI features for iPhone, iPad and other devices. If it comes to fruition, it will be Apple’s first HomePod device to do so.

In addition to the AI capabilities, the alleged touchscreen HomePod will also have a square screen instead of the rectangular one usually seen on tablets. The display could reportedly come with a customizable lock screen with multiple watch faces, similar to the Apple TV interface. Notably, references to a customizable lock screen with touchscreen support were discovered in the tvOS beta update.

The report suggests that it could also have a built-in camera that would support video conferencing apps like FaceTime and others. Along with this camera, the device could reportedly recognize hand gestures that could be used for control.

In addition, it is also speculated to enable user identification, allowing them to make personal requests – a feature that already exists on the HomePod and can be used with voice commands. It could also have media playback capabilities and could also work as an AirPlay receiver, the report added.
