Apple surprised many when it announced the integration of OpenAI’s artificial intelligence (AI) chatbot ChatGPT into its upcoming operating systems during a keynote session at the Worldwide Developers Conference (WWDC) 2024. This is the first time the tech giant has given a third party access to its entire system platforms. But this is just the beginning, if a new report is to be believed. The company is reportedly ready to open up its platform for further AI integrations with Google’s Gemini and other AI flagships.
Apple is reportedly open to integrating AI with Google Gemini
According to a report from 9to5Mac, Apple shared its future AI plans in a post-WWDC discussion. During a session moderated by YouTuber iJustine, Craig Federighi, senior vice president of software engineering at Apple, hinted that Gemini could also be integrated with Apple platforms in the future.
“We could look forward to integrations with different models like Google Gemini in the future. I mean, I don’t have anything to announce right now, but that’s our direction,” Federighi was quoted as saying.
Federighi’s mention of Google Gemini was reportedly in the context of Apple’s intentions to introduce more AI models to iOS, iPadOS, macOS and other operating systems. He emphasized that the company wanted to give users the advantage of using the AI model of their choice because different large language models (LLMs) can be adept at different tasks.
He also added that the decision to include ChatGPT first was made because the tech giant wanted to “start with the best,” according to the publication.
Apple integrates ChatGPT into all operating systems
During the WWDC 2024 keynote, Apple announced that it is integrating ChatGPT access within its upcoming operating systems for iPhone, iPad and Mac devices. Chatbot will bring various AI features through text and images. Siri will also be able to access ChatGPT’s knowledge base to provide answers to various user queries. However, users will need to opt in before Siri can share a query and any photo or document with the chatbot.
ChatGPT capabilities will also be available to users through a system-wide Authoring Tool. The Compose feature will also allow users to generate images using the chatbot. Namely, Apple uses ChatGPT powered by GPT-4o for its AI features.
