Apple Intelligence features to be delayed in Europe, iPhone maker blames EU tech rules

Apple will delay the launch of three new artificial intelligence features because landmark European Union technology rules require competing products and services to work with its devices, the US technology group said on Friday.

Apple earlier this month underscored its push for AI with a series of new features and software improvements for its iPhone and other devices to boost declining sales.

Apple Intelligence, which uses AI to conjure up text, images and other content on command, is said to be available on the iPhone 15 Pro, iPhone 15 Pro Max, and iPad and Mac with its M1 chip and later. iPhone Mirroring on macOS Sequoia lets you view and interact with your phone’s screen on Mac computers.

The company announced on Friday that three features – Phone Mirroring, SharePlay Screen Sharing enhancements and Apple Intelligence – will not be rolled out to EU users this year due to regulatory uncertainties over the EU’s Digital Markets Act (DMA).

“Specifically, we are concerned that the DMA interoperability requirements could force us to compromise the integrity of our products in ways that compromise user privacy and data security,” Apple said in an email.

“We are committed to working with the European Commission to try to find a solution that would allow us to deliver these features to our customers in the EU without compromising their security.”
