Apple AirPods with a camera for better surround sound capabilities are said to be unveiled soon: Ming-Chi Kuo

Apple is reportedly working on new AirPods that will be equipped with cameras. These new AirPods will have infrared (IR) cameras, similar to those integrated into the iPhone’s Face ID receiver. The Cupertino-based tech giant’s new true wireless stereo (TWS) is said to offer an enhanced surround audio experience when used with Apple Vision Pro, the company’s mixed reality headset. Last month at WWDC, the company unveiled new features for AirPods such as gesture-based controls for interacting with Siri, head-tracking capabilities while playing games, and improved audio during voice calls.

Apple has announced the launch of AirPods equipped with a camera

In a Medium post, TF Securities analyst Ming-Chi Kuo said: “My latest supply chain research shows that Apple plans to mass-produce new AirPods with camera modules by 2026, which will have an IR camera similar to the iPhone’s Face ID receiver (not a transmitter ).” In fact, a previous report in February also hinted at AirPods with cameras and advanced sensors.

The new AirPods functionality has reportedly been added to enhance the surround sound experience when paired with the Vision Pro and any future Apple headphones the company launches. It said that if a user watches a mixed reality video with the new headset and turns their head in a certain direction, they will hear a louder or more pronounced sound from the sound source in that direction. The overall effect is said to be a more immersive experience.

According to the report, the IR cameras on the AirPods will be able to detect changes in the surrounding image. They will be able to detect when the Vision Pro user moves their head and when the orientation of the video player changes in an augmented or virtual reality environment. Furthermore, the headset is also said to be able to offer in-air gestures to interact with the device.

Kuo claimed that Taiwan-based Foxconn is Apple’s supplier for IR cameras. The supply chain giant reportedly plans to produce 18-20 million units, which roughly translates to 10 million AirPods. However, these are projected figures and final production will depend on market conditions.
