Apple adds support for wired Xbox controllers to iPhone, iPad and Mac with latest update: report

Author:

According to the report, iPhone, iPad and Mac will now officially support Xbox wired controller connection after Apple’s latest update. This improves upon the previous feature which only allowed game controllers to be paired via Bluetooth. Apple’s expansion of support for gaming accessories comes at a time when the company is launching major gaming titles for its devices, with Resident Evil Village, Assassin’s Creed Mirage and Death Stranding already available to gamers.

Introduced support for wired Xbox controllers

According to a report by MacRumors, following the latest iOS 18, iPadOS 18 and macOS 15 Sequoia updates, Xbox wired controllers are now compatible with Apple devices. Before the updates, only PlayStation controllers supported a wired connection, while Xbox controllers could be connected via Bluetooth. Notably, Apple’s latest iPhone update is iOS 18.0.1, which was released yesterday.

The report says that Xbox uses a special USB protocol to connect its controller to devices, and Apple’s latest updates support it. Gamers can connect their controllers to an iPhone, iPad or Mac using a USB Type-C to Type-C cable.

Additionally, even those with older Apple devices that use their own Lightning port can also take advantage of this feature, albeit with some caveats. They will need to purchase the Lightning to USB Camera Adapter separately, which can be purchased from the Apple website for Rs. 2900.

Other updates

Apple recently released the iOS 18.1 Developer Beta 6 and Public Beta 3 updates for the iPhone, introducing new features. They add new dedicated Control Center toggles for AirDrop and Satellite. Meanwhile, there are new “Measure” and “Level” key combinations.

Notification summaries also got a new feature that shows the number of received notifications next to the stack on the lock screen. Apple also introduced recordings of sleep apnea detection and informs the user of any breathing disorders. Its details can be viewed in the Health app on iPhone.
