Amazon has unveiled its latest ad-supported video-on-demand service called Amazon MX Player. The result is the merger of two OTT streaming services — MX Player and Amazon miniTV. Amazon says its new streaming platform will offer content in a variety of genres and languages, while continuing to invest in original shows and movies. Both platforms’ library of shows and movies will be available to viewers on Amazon’s newest streaming service.

In a press release, Amazon said the new video-streaming platform will offer hit series like Aashram, Dharavi Bank, Campus Diaries, Bhaukaal, Raktanchal, Shiksha Mandal, Roohaniyat and Jamnapaar. It will also feature a collection of Korean, Mandarin and Turkish shows dubbed into Hindi, Tamil and other Indian languages.

Making the announcement, Girish Prabhu, Head of Amazon Advertising India, said, “Today we are bringing together the massive reach of MX Player, with advertising technology that leverages Amazon’s billions of user signals. It’s about enabling all brands, not just those that sell on Amazon, to reach and deliver relevant advertising to a very large and engaged base across India.”

The first mention of this deal appeared in 2023 when it was reported that Amazon had started negotiations with the Tencent-backed company, but they fell through. In May 2024, talks were said to have resumed and a deal was later reached for a reported sum of less than $100 million (approximately 839 million rupees). Inc42 pointed out that it was a cash transaction. At the time, MX Player’s senior management was said to be joining Amazon after the deal was completed.

Namely, Amazon does not own the video-streaming platform in its entirety, but only part of its assets. According to the report, Amazon is getting a “distribution and marketing partner” following this deal, which could potentially help the company develop into a “more popular and reliable” option for people in smaller cities.
