Apple is focusing on a pragmatic AI strategy as it plans to integrate new features into core apps: report

Apple’s Worldwide Developers Conference (WWDC) 2024 is likely to be one of the most important events in its recent history. The tech giant has been preparing its artificial intelligence (AI) strategy and new AI-powered features for its user base for the past year and a half. The company’s CEO Tim Cook also promised “exciting” generative AI features in two recent calls to stakeholders. A new report now claims that the iPhone maker could go down the path of pragmatism and offer features that are more practical for its users.

A practical vision of AI from Apple

While the Cupertino-based tech giant will likely want to leave a lasting impact with its WWDC event on June 10, following the AI announcements of OpenAI, Google and Microsoft could be tough. Bloomberg’s Mark Gurman emphasized in his Power On newsletter that instead of competing with flashy and impressive AI advances, the company is more likely to introduce features aimed at practical use.

Some of these features have been reported in the past. Siri may get AI integration that will make it more conversational and conducive to solving complex tasks. The Safari browser may also get an AI-based web page summarization feature. The Notes app is also said to get a live transcription feature. In addition, the report also mentions that the iPhone may come with its own artificial intelligence emoji.

According to the report, the idea is to offer users features they can use on a daily basis. Leveraging its massive user base could make it a top contender in the AI space. However, this is easier said than done. Gurman points out that Apple is still steadfast in its approach to making some of AI’s heavier computing functions available through servers. iPhone users may find it difficult to accept this offer, especially since the company has spent years preaching data privacy and locally processed features.ma

Apple OpenAI Agreement

In addition to them, the technological giant may have another ace up its sleeve. The report claims that Apple has struck a deal with OpenAI that will allow the iPhone maker to integrate ChatGPT into its devices. This will allow Apple to introduce one of the main chatbots on its smartphones and possibly Mac devices. Whether the company has any other surprises for users will become known on June 10, when the WWDC 2024 keynote session begins.
