The Samsung Galaxy S25 series supports the A/B system for seamless software updates

The Samsung Galaxy S25 series has been confirmed to launch in the first half of 2025. Now, a source suggests that Samsung’s supposed flagship smartphone lineup will support the Android A/B over-the-air (OTA) update system through two separate sections that make the process of downloading and installing software updates smoother. This system allows the user to continue using the device even while installing an update without any downtime.

A/B system update for Samsung Galaxy S25 series

In a post on X (formerly Twitter), tipster @chunvn8888 suggested that the alleged Samsung Galaxy S25 series will support A/B system updates. This is supposed to work through two separate system storage partitions. When the update is launched, its installation starts from the inactive “B” partition, while the smartphone system continues to work from the “A” partition.

This allows the user to continue using their device during the process, and the only downtime that occurs is when it reboots into the updated disk partition. If an OTA update fails or the device encounters an error, it boots back to the old partition or OS, ensuring that it can be used, making it less likely to go into an inactive state commonly referred to as “locked”. ‘. After that, users can try to install the software update again.

According to Android, another advantage of the A/B system is that there is no need to have enough system memory to download updates. Instead, they are streamed to the device. The only downside is that the device takes longer to boot into a new partition after installing the latest software.

This update system was first implemented on Chrome OS devices and then introduced to the Google Pixel series. The Samsung Galaxy S25 series could be the first offering from the company to support A/B system updates, if the author’s claims are true.
