Destiny developer Bungie is working on Marathon, a PvP shooter announced for 2023. Now, the studio has provided an update on the game, saying that its development is “on schedule”. Bungie, however, did not reveal Marathon’s gameplay, choosing instead to share concept images of the shooter and provide rare information about the development.

Marathon Developer Update

In a Developer Update video posted to YouTube on Monday, Marathon director Joe Ziegler broke Bungie’s silence on the sci-fi shooter. In the video, Ziegler shared an update on the game’s development and said that Bungie isn’t quite ready to reveal gameplay yet. But the game’s director said that various aspects of development are “on track.”

“We’ve made a lot of aggressive changes to the game over the last few years, and we’ve been iterating quite a bit. And during that time, we’ve been testing with a lot of players,” Ziegler said.

“Where the game is now, there are a lot of different things in the game in different states. Some things are getting a little more complete, like our environment is starting to come together really, really beautifully. Some of the character models we’ve been repeating, so they’re coming together, but not quite yet. Our enemy models are skills in a somewhat nascent state,” he added.

The developer said that while it’s too early to show gameplay to players, the development of “all these things is going according to plan.”

“They are not all together. But when they all come together, we’re really, really looking forward to showing you what it looks like, especially in-game,” Ziegler said.

New concept art

In the Developer Update video, Bungie also shared some new concept images from Marathon. The first screenshot shows the “Runner” from the game codenamed “Thief” and the second shows another character codenamed “Stealth”, the Runner with an emphasis on stealth gameplay.

Bungie has said it will reveal more content from the game in 2025, when they also plan to expand the Marathon playtests. “Moving forward, we’re looking to add a significant amount of players to each of our stages,” Ziegler said.

Developer Destiny hasn’t provided any updates on Marathon in the 17 months since it was revealed via a teaser trailer at the PlayStation Showcase in May 2023. Before Monday’s update, Marathon X was last posted on May 27, 2023, when the game was first released. announced “We’re going into the dark now to focus on the game… and when we come back we’ll have gameplay!” the post said.

In August, Bungie announced it was laying off 220 employees as part of a cost-cutting effort to restructure the studio and its operations. The studio’s CEO, Pete Parsons, said at the time that the company needed to make “significant changes” to its cost structure and “fully focus its efforts on the development of Destiny and Marathon.”

Marathon doesn’t have a release date yet, but the game is available as a wishlist on the Steam, PlayStation, and Xbox storefronts.
