A NASA astronaut captures a timelapse of red and green auroras from space

NASA astronaut Matthew Dominick recently shared a stunning timelapse video showing vivid red and green auroras from space. The mesmerizing footage was captured by the Dragon Endeavor spacecraft on October 8 as it orbited Earth. These displays of natural light, known as auroras, are caused by the interaction of solar activity with Earth’s atmosphere, creating stunning images that can be seen both from the ground and from space. Dominick shared his experience in a post, offering a look at his view from the spacecraft window.

Auroras captured from Dragon Endeavour

Dominick captured the brilliant aurora while looking out the window of Dragon Endeavour, which was docked near the International Space Station (ISS). He explained that his view also included the Dragon Freedom spacecraft, enhancing the surreal quality of the shot. “The red and green aurora seem to be dancing as we fly past Dragon Endeavor’s window overlooking Dragon Freedom,” Dominick noted in his post. The vibrant display is the result of solar activity that has recently intensified.

Life aboard the Dragon Endeavour

Dominick gave some insight into his current living conditions on the spacecraft, mentioning that since the arrival of Crew-9 he had moved from his quarters on the ISS to the Dragon Endeavour. He also described how the view from the spacecraft, especially during the aurora display, made his experience unforgettable. Dominick said the spectacular aurora borealis made staying at the pier an easy decision, as leaving earlier would have meant missing out on the stunning sight.

Capturing the perfect shot

The team devoted a lot of time to capturing the aurora, taking thousands of images over multiple nights to ensure they achieved the perfect settings and lighting for the timelapse. The video quickly caught the attention of viewers around the world, many of whom were amazed by the natural beauty and unique perspective the footage provided.
