Sony appears to be working on a new platform for free-to-play mobile games, according to details revealed in a PlayStation job listing. The mobile platform architect job listing mentions that the position requires designing the PlayStation platform to “develop, publish and operate free-to-play mobile games.” The event comes after Microsoft announced that it will launch an Xbox mobile store in July.
Sony PlayStation list offers new plans for mobile games
A PlayStation job listing spotted by TweakTown reveals some details about Sony’s mobile gaming plans. According to the listing, PlayStation Studios Mobile is looking for an experienced software engineer to lead the development and implementation of Sony’s mobile gaming platform. The individual will also have to work with internal teams to connect mobile games to existing PlayStation services.
The list also mentions the responsibilities of the role. The person would “design the system architecture and server services for the mobile gaming platform” and “actively monitor technical innovations, changes and trends affecting mobile game development.”
Additionally, Sony is looking for someone with experience in API development or related SDKs and a working knowledge of game engines such as Unity or Unreal Engine.
Parent company PlayStation has yet to officially announce its plans for the free-to-play mobile gaming platform. However, the company is reportedly working on bringing some of its most popular PlayStation games to mobile devices.
In a presentation last year, the company reportedly said that many of its in-house studios are working on mobile games. In the presentation, Sony said it expects mobile games to account for nearly 5 percent of its game portfolio in 2023, and that share will rise to 10 percent by 2025.
Sony’s competitor, Microsoft, is also making movies in the field of mobile games. Last year, Xbox parent Activision Blizzard completed its $69 billion acquisition of King; King is the developer and publisher of popular mobile games such as Candy Crush Saga and Farm Heroes Saga.
Microsoft also announced earlier this month that it plans to launch its long-awaited Xbox mobile game store in July, where it will offer its portfolio of its own mobile games such as Candy Crush and Minecraft.
