ChatGPT gets a new ‘Canvas’ interface for writing and coding, offers built-in editing tools

ChatGPT is getting a new feature that will make it easier for humans and artificial intelligence (AI) to collaborate on a project together. Just days after its annual DevDay conference in San Francisco, OpenAI announced a new Canvas chatbot interface. The feature opens a separate window within the platform and allows users to edit the generated content or ask AI to change parts of it using specific tools. The AI company noted that the feature works with coding and creative writing projects.

ChatGPT’s Canvas interface released

In a blog post, the AI company detailed the new feature for ChatGPT. Canvas is a smaller window that opens inside the chatbot interface. The feature is built using GPT-4o, and users should have access to the model to use it. The feature, which is currently in early beta, is rolling out to ChatGPT Plus and Team users worldwide. It will be extended to Enterprise and Edu customers next week. OpenAI also emphasized that Canvas will be available to all users once it exits beta.

Canvas offers a new form of collaboration between humans and artificial intelligence on projects that are more complicated or require detailed fine-tuning. Usually the way ChatGPT works is that users can add a query and the output is generated. In case the generated text is not satisfactory, users can add subsequent queries, improve the initial query and hope for a better result. However, this trial-and-error method still doesn’t address minor training needs.

With Canvas, users will now see new inline editing tools when the interface is active. There are five tools for writing projects. “Suggest changes” will change a selected part of the entire text while “Adjust length” will allow users to shorten or extend the record. “Change Reading Level” can adjust the reading level of the text with options from Kindergarten to Graduate.

The “Add final polish” tool checks for grammar, clarity and consistency, and the “Add emoji” adds relevant emojis for extra emphasis.

While coding, the Canvas interface will display five separate tools. “Code Review” asks ChatGPT to offer built-in suggestions for improving the code, and “Add Logs” can insert print statements to help users debug and better understand the code. The “Add Comments” tool on highlighted code will add an AI-generated comment that explains the code.

The “Fix bugs” tool can detect and rewrite code with errors, and the “Port to a language” tool can translate code into JavaScript, TypeScript, Python, Java, C++ or PHP.

However, users can also take full control over the generated text and code and edit them directly. OpenAI stated that this interface is designed to allow users to offer precise feedback to AI like a copy editor or code viewer.
