Tata Electronics said on Thursday it will resume some of its operations at a fire-ravaged plant in the southern Indian state of Tamil Nadu, where Apple iPhone components are made.
The fire broke out in one of the six units of the plant on Saturday morning. Fire officials and local government officials told Reuters that the incident occurred in an area where chemicals were stored.
“Today we plan to resume work in many parts of the enterprise. And as we work towards a full recovery, all of our team members will continue to receive full pay,” said a company representative.
The district authorities and the company have not yet determined the cause of the fire.
The state industrial director gave the company the go-ahead to start operations, district administrative official K.M. Sarayu said.
M Velu, district fire service officer, said the amount of damage was not yet known.
“We will know more only after the debris is removed. The whole shed collapsed, there was little visible damage,” Velu said.
The Tata Electronics factory fire is the latest to affect Apple suppliers in India and comes as the US firm diversifies its supply chain beyond China.
The fire could hamper production ahead of a sales surge during the holiday season, an industry watcher and a source told Reuters earlier this week.
