Snapchat has partnered with Google Cloud to bring the capabilities of its Gemini artificial intelligence (AI) model to My AI. Announced on Tuesday, the strategic partnership allowed the social media platform to add computer vision capabilities, as well as enhanced text, audio and code processing. According to the Mountain View-based tech giant, Snapchat’s My AI uses the Gemini AI models available on Vertex AI. Interestingly, the media-centric social media platform was also launched on Google Cloud in 2011.

Snapchat’s My AI is powered by Gemini

Google Cloud explained the details of the partnership in a press release. Although the announcement comes now, the integration of Gemini into My AI was done earlier this year. The tech giant noted that Snapchat’s AI chatbot is one of the largest consumer chatbots available to users today.

With this integration, My AI not only gains basic generative AI capabilities, but also enhanced capabilities in text, audio, image, video, and code processing. This means users can send an audio file or image to the AI and ask questions about it. In the video, Snapchat CEO Evan Spiegel noted that users can send the chatbot a picture of various snacks and ask it to identify the healthiest option.

In real-world scenarios, users can also use this capability to allow a chatbot to translate a street sign when traveling to a foreign country. Similarly, it will be able to respond to queries from a video file.

Currently, all Snapchat users can use My AI, however, Plus subscribers have access to some additional features such as AI image generation and editing. Google claims that since Gemini began powering My AI, the platform has seen 2.5 times more engagement in the US. Namely, before Gemini, the chatbot was powered by OpenAI’s GPT model.

At the Gemini at Work digital event, Google Cloud also unveiled other new customers that have incorporated its AI models for new experiences. Some of them include Volkswagen US, Warner Bros. Discovery, Bell Canada, Best Buy, Telecom Italia and others.
