Android 15 will reportedly extend the device’s standby battery life by up to 3 hours

Google shared more details about Android 15 during its I/O 2024 developer sessions, according to a report. One such detail related to the company’s efforts to improve the device’s battery life — especially standby battery life. The tech giant has reportedly revealed that it has reworked Android’s Doze mode to ensure that background apps don’t run when the device is not in use. This tweak is said to extend standby battery life up to three hours for Android devices.

Writing for Android Authority, Mishaal Rahman mentioned in the report that he asked Dave Burke, VP of Android Platform Engineering, and Android Ecosystem President Sameet Samat, about the efforts being made to improve battery life with Android 15. The duo explained that one an important way to do this is through the Dose mode.

For the uninitiated, Doze mode was first introduced with Android 6.0 Marshmallow as a way to manage background processes on the device when it was in sleep mode. Controls which apps will have access to running in the background and how long they can run. The Android platform intelligently optimizes idle time to allow multiple background tasks to run together in a small maintenance time frame. This ensures that different apps don’t launch at different times, keeping the device awake for much longer than necessary.

According to the report, Burke emphasized that with Android 15, Doze mode has been sped up by 50 percent. This means that the device will enter this mode 50 percent faster. By increasing the sleep state duration, Android will be able to manage background processes more optimally. This tweak is said to make the difference in up to three hours of extra standby battery life for the devices.

Apart from optimizing battery life, Android 15 also brings a number of new features for users. With the release of Android 15 Beta 2, users saw a new private space that serves as a place to hide certain sensitive apps. These apps will not appear on the home screen or in the app drawer. Furthermore, this space will reportedly be accessed from a separate Google account and will come with password and PIN protection.
