Apple is reportedly researching a new technology to simplify the iPhone battery replacement process

According to the report, Apple is studying the possibility of using a new technology that will simplify the battery replacement process in future iPhone models. The Cupertino-based company was previously reported to be redesigning the battery housing, which could be used as part of the company’s efforts to simplify the process of disconnecting the battery from the iPhone. Apple has yet to announce plans to make iPhone batteries more replaceable, which could be triggered by incoming EU rules that are expected to mandate removable batteries in electronics.

The Information reports (via 9to5Mac ) that Apple is working on a new method for replacing iPhone batteries. According to the report, which cites people familiar with the company’s plans, the “electrically induced adhesive peel” technology will allow users to remove the battery from the iPhone’s interior by “giving the battery a small jolt of electricity.”

Apple’s current iPhone models feature batteries that are covered in foil and held in place with strips of glue, meaning users have to use a pair of tweezers to pry the device out of the phone’s case. It’s an inconvenient process—you can read more about it on Apple’s support page.

According to the report, the company could put future iPhone batteries in metal instead of foil, allowing the new technology to “displace” the battery and replace it. While this may be easier than trying to remove the battery from the phone, the company will reportedly continue to advise users not to attempt repairs themselves.

The publication notes that this year Apple plans to equip one model of the iPhone 16 series of smartphones with batteries that are easier to replace, while this technology may be available on all models next year. Last year, an image of an alleged iPhone 16 Pro battery with a metal body was leaked online.

Given Apple’s tendency to keep its hardware changes and improvements under wraps until the unveiling of its devices, we can expect to learn more about this technology — if it exists — in the coming months when the iPhone 16 series is unveiled.
