The Blackmagic Camera app is coming to Samsung Galaxy and Google Pixel smartphones

Blackmagic Camera – a professional digital film camera and imaging application – is now available on Android smartphones, the company announced on Monday. The application contains professional video recording tools and was developed by Blackmagic, an Australian manufacturer of digital cinema hardware. It launched on the iPhone last year and is now available on select Android smartphones, according to the company.

Features of Blackmagic Camera

In a press release, Blackmagic announced that it is bringing its Camera app to select Samsung Galaxy and Google Pixel smartphones. It claims to be built on the same operating system as the company’s more expensive film cameras, with features and controls for digital film – the same tools used in feature films, television and documentaries.

The Blackmagic Camera app also has support for Blackmagic Cloud, an online media file storage solution, which can be used to collaborate with others using DaVinci Resolve, using a chat workspace. Furthermore, the company claims to have a one-touch solution for adjusting settings such as frame rate, shutter angle, white balance and ISO. Users can record media in industry standard formats in up to 8K resolution.

It also allows users to choose between different codecs, including H.264, also known as Advanced Video Coding (AVC), and H.265, known as High Efficiency Video Coding (HEVC).

With the Blackmagic camera, users can shoot in 16:9 or vertical aspect ratio. The app also includes features such as focus assist, zebra, frame guides and a histogram – all aimed at improving videography. Videos recorded with the app can be time-coded and viewed with thumbnails on the media card.

Availability of Blackmagic Camera

The Blackmagic Camera app is available as a free download from the Google Play Store. Although it is introduced for the Android platform, it is only available on the Samsung Galaxy S24 and S23 series and the Google Pixel 8 and Pixel 7 series.
