The Apple Vision Pro 2 – the rumored successor to the Cupertino tech giant’s first mixed reality headset – may not see the light of day at all, according to a report. This development is reportedly due to poor sales of the AR/VR headset which costs $3,499 (roughly Rs. 290,000) for the base model with 256GB storage. However, Apple may still have plans for a cheaper device, albeit with fewer features, it has been suggested.
No Apple Vision Pro 2
Citing industry sources involved in the supply chain of its components, The Information reported that development of the Apple Vision Pro 2 may have been halted. This is reportedly due to the poor sales of the headphones that analysts have flagged.
First announced during WWDC 2023, Vision Pro was initially only available in the US. However, its availability has been expanded to several other regions over the past few months, with Apple announcing sales of the handset in eight new regions, including Singapore, China, Japan, Hong Kong, Australia, Canada and the UK. Apple calls the device its “immersive computer” that allows users to experience apps in augmented reality (AR) and virtual reality (VR) environments.
While the Vision Pro 2 may not happen, Apple still reportedly has plans for a new headset. The report suggests that a cheaper version of the Vision Pro could be launched before the end of 2025. It is speculated that this model will have a lower price with fewer features. To achieve this, Apple has reportedly shifted resources from Vision Pro 2 development to another team that may be working to reduce the cost of Vision Pro components.
According to the report, the more affordable Vision Pro variant is part of Apple’s initial strategy that involved launching the handset in two variants: Standard and Pro, similar to other devices in Apple’s ecosystem such as the iPhone.
