Apple’s iPhone 17 series isn’t expected to debut until next year, but details of the company’s alleged plans for its upcoming devices have already surfaced online. According to Mark Gurman of Bloomberg, Apple is working on an iPhone 17 model with a thinner body than the company’s existing smartphones, as well as slimmer versions of the existing MacBook Pro and Apple Watch models. Last month, the company launched the updated iPad Pro model — Apple’s thinnest tablet to date — along with the new Apple Pencil Pro.
In his weekly Power On newsletter, Gurman claims that the iPad Pro isn’t the only Apple device to be updated with a thinner body. Citing unidentified sources, he says the Cupertino-based company is “focused” on developing a new model with a slim design as part of the iPhone 17 lineup, which is expected to arrive in 2025.
Readers may recall that the iPhone 15 and iPhone 15 Plus are 7.8mm thick, while the iPhone 15 Pro and iPhone 15 Pro Max are 8.3mm thick. It is currently unclear whether Apple will equip the is Pro models with a thinner body, as in the new iPad Pro (2024) models.
According to Gurman, Apple is also working on a thinner version of the MacBook Pro. The latest MacBook Pro model with the company’s M3 chip and 16-inch display is 1.68cm when closed, while its smaller sibling is a bit thinner at 1.56cm.
The latest MacBook Pro models (released in 2021) have increased thickness with the return of MagSafe charging, an SD card slot and additional ports, while the company’s MacBook Air models have fewer ports and a slimmer design.
Similarly, Gurman says in its newsletter that the Apple Watch will be updated with a slimmer case compared to previous models. This statement is confirmed by TF Securities International analyst Ming-Chi Kuo, who claims that the Apple Watch Series 10 will have a thinner design and may have a larger display (up to 49 mm).
Neither Kuo nor Gurman have said when the updated Apple Watch models will be released, while the slimmer iPhone is expected to arrive in the iPhone 17 series in the second half of 2025, based on Apple’s previous launch timelines. It’s currently unknown when Apple will release the rumored MacBook Pro with a slimmer design, but more details are likely to emerge in the coming months.
