Nothing OS 3.0 Lock screen customization, dot animation features teased by CEO Carl Pei

Nothing OS 3.0 was teased by company CEO Carl Pei on Saturday. The company, known for its social media marketing strategies, caused a stir when a company executive “leaked” new features and a timetable for the third major update of its smartphone operating system. Nothing OS 3.0 will feature customizable lock screens that will integrate widgets. There is also a dot animation feature, which was hinted at in a separate post. Nothing OS 3.0 will be announced in September, but no specific date has been mentioned.

Nothing OS 3.0 new features to tease

In a post on X (formerly known as Twitter), Pei posted several images showing off the new lock screen customization feature. Posting the images, the co-founder of Nothing said: “Apologies to the team in advance for this leak… but I’m too excited!” The post follows several such strange social media posts by Pei in an attempt to generate excitement for the products and features. In fact, before the launch of Nothing Phone 2a, he changed his X name to ‘Carl Bhai’.

In the post, one of the images shows three different views of the lock screen, each with a unique customization. The first one showed the default lock screen with the time, day and date and quick access buttons at the bottom. However, another view, which will be available with Nothing OS 3.0, showed a “Clock + Widget” option.

This customization appears with three widgets — weather forecast, quick action shortcut, and date. On this screen, the clock is displayed in Nothing’s dot matrix font. Another customization option is called “Extended Widget Area” and will likely offer more information on the lock screen. In the split image, a large analog clock and date pad occupied the space given to the clock on the previous two lock screens. This option also contains widgets for quick action, weather and contacts.

In a separate announcement, Pei also hinted at a Dot Animation feature. This feature, which appears to be for images, has three layers — an input image, a live interaction layer, and a final output. The CEO did not share the use case or how the feature works. Finally, he also hinted at an announcement date for Nothing OS 3.0 in a post where he added, “I’m going to stop now to leave some magic for the September announcement.”
